When I had my son, I was the first in my family to become a mom, and honestly… it was a steep learning curve. We weren’t allowed to have anyone over during the pandemic, so I had no in-person support. I ended up reading lots of books, watching videos, and scrolling through endless lists of baby gear to find a worth-it baby essentials list and, sometimes, feeling overwhelmed and confused about what really mattered.

But as time went on, I realized there were other things I kept grabbing again and again, products that didn’t feel urgent at first, but that honestly made everyday life easier.

So here are the essentials I actually used, relied on, and recommend with real-life context, not just a generic checklist.

1. Culturelle Baby Digestive Calm & Comfort Probiotic (Age 0-12 Mos) 8.5Ml, Helps Periodic Colic

My son struggled with colic for the first eight months of his life. It was really hard to see him uncomfortable so often. A homeopathic solution like Cocyntal and Culturelle Baby Digestive was recommended by several moms in my circle, and I kept using them because they were gentle and easy, even in the middle of the night, no more cries, he was instantly soothed.

Why it matters:
Colic can be draining for both baby and parent. If something helps, even a little, that’s a win. This is something many moms keep on hand, but always check with your pediatrician before giving anything new to your baby.

2. NARUTOO Or Dream Swaddle Wrap

We tried traditional swaddling, but my son always wriggled out of it. This swaddle wrap stayed put and was comfortable for him. This swaddle is easy to put on, starting at birth, you don’t need to learn how to swaddle if you don’t feel comfortable doing so.

Note:
Not all babies like tight swaddles; finding a wrap that works for your baby can make sleep and comfort easier.

3. MAM Original Baby Pacifiers 0-6 Months

What I love about these bibs is that when the bedroom light is off, I can see where my son is thanks to these glow-in-the-dark bibs. They’re also the only ones he didn’t reject; I understand that they are popular and well-reviwed on Amazon. A pacifier your baby accepts can save a lot of frustration.

4. Dr. Brown’s Clean Steam Sterilizer + Dryer

Honestly, whether you’re using formula or putting breast milk in bottles who wants their bottles to be spotless, sterilized, and dry? I’m serious. I love this product. Just wash your bottles with mild soap and a brush, and you can easily fit them into the Dr. Brown’s sterilizer. It holds a total of six bottles and works really well. Say goodbye to the stress of bacteria on your bottles!

In the chaos of motherhood, cutting down even one tiny task feels like a blessing.

5. Silicone Rinse C.up or Munchkin® Rinse™ Shampoo Bath Rinser Cup

Some babies love bath time, others… tolerate it. A simple silicone rinse cup helped me wash shampoo off gently without water in his eyes. I still use it, and I like the nozzle because it helps keep too much water from pouring onto your child’s head.

Why it matters:
Making bath time a calmer experience set a gentler tone for the day.

6. JJ Cole Original Bundleme Bunting Bag

This cozy bunting bag was a lifesaver for chilly outdoor outings. It keeps babies warm, even down to -30 degrees. I used it here in Canada during the winter, and everything went well. It’s definitely a high-quality product.

Why it matters:
Weather matters. Having gear suited to your climate can make outdoor time much more comfortable.

7. Nuby Soft Silicone Teether

When teething started, most toys were ignored, except this simple silicone teether. He used it again and again. I’d like to tell you that this is the only teething toy my son actually enjoyed chewing on when his baby teeth were coming in. Yes, it’s painful, but I really like how this toy is made, it really does provide relief, and seeing how happy it makes your child will make you understand.

Why it matters:
Not all teething toys are equal. Finding one that your baby actually uses makes teething much easier.

8. Boiron Camilia Baby Teething Relief

Alongside teethers, having a teething relief medicine nearby gave me peace of mind during bad flare-ups. This is something many moms keep on hand, but always check with your pediatrician before giving anything new to your baby.

Why it matters:
Comfort matters for both baby and parent.

9. Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow Baby Bottles (6-Pack)

These bottles were recommended to me when my baby was colicky. At first, I was skeptical, but they became the only ones we continued to use.

Why it matters:
Sometimes the small things, like bottles that reduce discomfort, are game changers in everyday life.

10. Water Tummy Time:

Tummy time is critical for strengthening neck and upper body muscles, but it can feel like a struggle. This water-filled mat made it more fun and engaging. The great thing about this is that instead of doing boring tummy time, the baby can watch the fake fish in the fake ocean. Don’t worry it’s pretty safe. Even though it’s a mattress filled with water, it’s quite sturdy and durable.

11. Waterproof Travel Diaper Bag

A good diaper bag isn’t just a bag; it’s your portable survival kit. I chose one with multiple compartments and insulated pockets, so I could easily organize bottles, wipes, snacks, and spare clothes.

Why it matters:
More function = less stress when you really need it.

12. Baby Colic and Gas Relief –  Tummy Wrap for Newborns Belly Relief by Soothing Warmth

This heated tummy wrap can be helpful when your baby seems uncomfortable from gas or tummy tension. I liked the idea of having something gentle and soothing on hand, especially during those fussy moments when you’re trying everything to help your baby feel better.

Why it matters:
Gas discomfort can make newborn days feel exhausting. Having a soothing option nearby can give both baby and mom a little more comfort.

14. Desitin Daily Defense Baby Diaper Rash Cream 

Zinc-based diaper rash cream should be at the top of your list. Newborn skin is super sensitive, especially after frequent diaper changes, and this kind of cream can prevent redness and discomfort.

Your baby might need frequent changes early on, and having a reliable rash cream can save you from a lot of fuss and tears.

15. Silicone Spatula for Cream Application

Pair this with your rash cream, and it makes applying the cream so much more hygienic and quick. This means fewer reminders to wash your hands and less stress during routine changes.

16. Genie Diaper Disposal System:

Changing diapers multiple times a day means dealing with odors, and a diaper disposal system that seals smells truly makes life easier. Look for one with a foot pedal so you don’t have to touch anything with your hands.

17. Electric nail clipper:

Tiny baby nails can scratch their face, and trimming them with traditional clippers can be scary. An electric baby nail clipper makes this task safer and much less stressful. 

18. Levoit Air Purifier:

Dry air, especially during the winter months, can irritate the baby’s nose and throat. A humidifier is a must for baby products as it adds moisture to the air, which can help with congestion and make sleeping easier. Many moms also use air purifiers to keep the nursery environment fresh, especially if you’ve got pets or allergies.

 

19. Angel Care Baby Bath Support:

A bath support with an ergonomic design makes bathtime safer and less stressful, especially in those first months when you’re still finding your feet. Your rhythm as a parent.

20. Nasal Aspirator (The “Snotsucker”)

Not everything on this list will be a “must-have” for every family, but these are the items that worked for me, over months, not just days. Parenting isn’t a race, and you’ll find your rhythm.
