Hello, my name is Sarah, and I’ve been blogging about motherhood for almost 3 years. I’ve written a lot of posts about Amazon essentials for newborns and new moms, but today I’m writing a post about essentials for older toddlers (ages 1 to 3).

Between the tantrums, the endless energy, and the constant “why?” questions, it’s a lot. But after almost three years of trial and error with my son, I’ve finally figured out what actually works.

I’ve done dozens of products, wasted money on things that flopped, and discovered hidden gems Ican’tt live without now. So I put together this list of can’t-miss toddler must-haves to help you navigate the chaos of transitioning to a big kid bed, potty training, and surviving mealtime without losing your mind.

Whether your little one is just turning one or pushing three, these are the items that made the biggest difference for us. Let’s get into it!

 #1 — Visual Timer

Bedtime battles are exhausting. This little timer changed everything for us. Set it, and when it beeps, that’s it, no arguing, no negotiating. My son doesn’t think that’s ME anymore. Bonus: works amazingly for cleanup time and ending green time, too. Such a simple $15 fix for so much daily stress.

#2 — Toddler Bedding Set (Mattress, Pillow & Zippered Pillowcase)

Here’s what nobody tells you: you don’t need all the decorative pillows. Save your money. What you DO need is a proper toddler-sized pillow with a zippered case; it’s safer and stays put all night. We’ve washed ours a million times, and it’s held up beautifully.

🚽 Potty Training

#3 — Folding Travel Potty Seat

Public restrooms with a potty-training toddler? Terrifying. This folds completely flat, fits in any diaper bag, and snaps onto any toilet, so your little one feels secure. I bought a backup because I never want to be caught without it. Non-negotiable for any outing during the potty training phase.

#4 — Non-Slip Step Stool

This stool grips the floor like nothing else. No sliding, no tipping, no heart attacks. He climbs up confidently, does his thing, then scoots it over to wash her hands all by herself. Independence for him and peace of mind for me.

#5 — Training Underwear 

Potty training is no joke, but the right training underwear makes ALL the difference. These are thick enough to catch small accidents (becauselet’ss be real, they happen!) but thin enough that he actually feels the wetness, which is key for learning. My little guy transitioned so much faster once we ditched pull-ups during the day and switched to these. They’re soft, stretchy, and come in fun prints that he gets excited to wear. Pro tip: Grab at least 10 pairs because laundry will become your new best friend during this phase. Worth every penny for a smoother potty training journey!

#6— Sectioned Suction Plate

If your toddler loves throwing his plate across the room (mine sure did!), a good suction plate is non-negotiable. This one sticks firmly to the highchair tray or table, so he can focus on eating instead of launching his food. The separate sections are perfect for picky eaters; he likes seeing his foods NOT touching each other (toddler logic, am I right?). It’s BPA-free, dishwasher-safe, and has honestly survived countless meals without losing suction. One of those purchases that seems small but makes mealtime so much less stressful. Highly recommend for any parent who’s tired of cleaning spaghetti off the floor!

#7— Fisher-Price Quick-Cleann’Goo Booster Basic:

Feeding time used to be a whole process: setting up the high chair and cleaning every crack and crevice afterward. This booster seat changed everything. It straps securely to any chair, has a removable tray that’s super easy to wipe down, and folds flat when we’re done. My son loves sitting “like a big boy” at the table with us. And whenhe’ss done making his” ” “ess? I clean it in under a minute, a game-changer for busy mornings.

#8— Snack Container ( 5 compartments):

The cutest little lunch container for daycare, park trips, or snack time at home. The compartments keep everything separated (because apparently carrots touching crackers is a tragedy). Easy for little hands to open, easy for me to pack quickly.

#9 — Kids Gummy Vitamins:

Started these around age two and a half after talking to our pediatrician. He thinkthey’rere candy and reminds me what timit’s’s for vitaminsThey’rere the same brand as mineit’s’s become part of our little morning routine together.

#10 — Oral-B Toothbrush 0-2 years old:

Getting a toddler to open his mouth for a toothbrush is a battle unless you have the right one. This Oral-B brush has extra soft bristles that are gentle on tiny gums, and the small head fits perfectly in his little mouth. He actually lets me brush now without turning it into a wrestling match. Started with this one early, and it made building the habit so much easier.

 🛁 BATH TIME

#11— Skip Hop Moby Bath:

Bath time with a wiggly toddler is terrifying. One slip and your heart stops. This bath mat sticks to the tub like glue and has the cutest whale design. My son actually looks fo” “the whole whilsit’s’s bath time no”” The texture is grippy but soft on its skin, andhasn’tt budged once. Peace of mind for under $20? Absolutely worth it.

I’m super careful about what goes on myson’ss skin,I’mm sure. This 2-in-1 Shampoo is plant-based, hypoallergenic, and smells amazing without being overpowering. It lathers well, rinses clean, anddoesn’tt irritate his sensitive scalp. Plus, one bottledoesn’tt air, AND body, less clutter in the tub, less stress for me.We’vee been through probably six bottles now.

From Sitting to Walking His Favorite Toy Through Every Stage!

This walker has been one of the best investmentswe’vee made. When my little guy was still sitting, he loved the detachable activity panel it kept him busy with buttons, spinning gears, piano keys, and songs for what felt like hours. Then, when he started pulling himself up, we attached it to the walker base and watched him take his first wobbly steps with the biggest grin on his face.

This””ok is pure magic. My son asks for it every single night. The rhythm, the colors, theanimalhe’se’ss mesmerized. He now reads it to me, pointing athe’ss animal and making the sounds.It’ss helped so much with his vocabulary and attention. If youdon’tt already own this one, add it to your cart immediately. A bedtime staple in our house.

 

#15—Magnetic Tiles

The Toy That Never Gets Old! I swear, I bought 4 box of it !

Ifthere’ss ONE toyI’dd recommend to every toddler mom,it’ss magnetic tiles. Seriously, these things are magic. My little guy can spend forever stacking, building, and knocking them down and then doing it all over again.It’ss the kind of open-ended play that sparks creativity and keeps him entertained without screens.

What I love:they’ree super easy for tiny hands to connect, the colors are bright and fun, andhe’ss actually learning shapes, colors, and basic engineering without even knowing it. Plus, they grow with him toddlers build towers, older kids make castles and cars.We’vee had ours for months and they still get pulled out every single day.

Fair warning: you WILL end up stepping on a few. But honestly? Worth it. These are the definition of a toy that pays for itself. A total must-have in our playroom! 🧲✨

#16— VTechLil” Critters Spin and Learn

This toy teaches colors, animals, numbers, AND music all in one. My son spins the wheel over and over, and I can see him actually learning without even realizing it. The songs are catchy,you’lll have them stuck in your head fair warning),andyou’llll have volume control, a blessing. Perfect for independent play while I get things done.

 

#18 — Mega Blocks- First Builders:

Classic for a reason. These big, colorful blocks are perfect for little hands that are still developing fine motor skills. My son spends forever stacking, building, and yes, destroying.It’ss taught him colors, counting, and how to focus on them. Easy to clean up, nearly indestructible, and he never gets bored with them.

#19 — Flashcards First words:

We started using these around 18 months ago, and wow, the progress. Each card has a clear image on one side and the word on the other. My son holds them, flips them, names them. It turned into a game we play every day. His word explosion? I credit a lot of it to these cards. Simple, affordable, and actually effective.

#22 — Tide Stain Remover Spray 

The stain spray has saved countless outfits from permanent damage works on everything from blueberries to mystery stains Idon’tt want to identify. By the way, I love Tide powder detergent too, even ifit’ss an old brand, Ihaven’tt found any other detergent that I can use for both stains on clothes and on the floor.

#23 —Humble Craw-Kids:

Toy chaos was taking over our Craw-Kids. This organizer saved my sanity. The bins are the perfect size for toddler toys, andthey’ree low enough that my son can grab what he wantsthey’ree it back himself. We do one bin for blocks, one for cars, and one for books.It’ss made cleanup so much easier. Anchored to the wall. It looks cute, totally functional.

Side Note : Toy rotation was a game-changer for us. Each bin has a theme: animals in one, puzzles in another, art supplies in the next. The rest of the toys stay hidden in a closet. She feels like she has choices, plays longer with each thing, and cleanup is actually manageable. Anchor it to the wall for safety.

 

#24 — Humble Crew Kids Book Rack: 

Books were everywhere under the couch, in his toy bin, crammed in random corners. This little book rack keeps them front-facing so he can actually see the covers and the cat he wants to read about.It’ss made him way more interested in books because he can browse like a little library. Super easy to assemble and fits perfectly in his room.
